Book Bag Brigade

Posted by PicasaThe annual gathering of Nu and Kappa DKG sisters happened in October at Jitters in Eagle River. Hundreds of books were bagged up with bookmarks and literacy information for young readers and their families.

Mini-Grant Breakfast

Lisa, Barb, Clea, Cynthia, Kathy, Helen, Twila, Sheryl, Lindsay - We enjoyed a yummy breakfast, were inspired by the creative projects teachers shared, and then invited everyone to the DKG state convention in April by singing a song!

Here's a snapshot of this year's mini-grant winners.  The winning grant projects were: growing plants in the library; using puppets to help kids retell stories and enhance book reports; crafting native drums; providing art supplies to students in Africa; and distributing dictionaries to ELL students and their families.

Stamp It!

Our friend, Dana, stopped by to help us create a batch of lovely cards. It was fun to play with her collection of cardstock, fancy scissors, ribbons, stamps and inks. We'll use the cards to stay in touch with our Nu sisters.

May Initiation and Reinstatement 2010

We welcomed a new member, Jamie and welcomed back a former DKG member, Allison, at our May meeting. We also wished Ann and Colleen, "Happy Retirement," after many years as exemplary educators. Smiles and tears...

April Leadership Workshop 2010

A few pictures from the April Leadership Workshop. It was a great time - we had a tremendous turnout from Nu. During lunch, we advertised next year's state convention, inviting everyone to come. (Nu is in charge of the convention next year.) Twila created a musical commercial which we all snapped and sang to. I love the last picture of our newest recruits with the International speaker, Phyllis Hickey. Note the buttons that ask, What's Nu, DKG?

February Fun - 2010

The February meeting was held in Lisa's home. Our guest speaker, Ruth Townsend talked to us about the stages we go through when we decide to change a behavior. She encouraged us to "hang in there," to meet our goals and reminded us that having a circle of encouraging friends is a key for success.
Jane and Sheryl, Lindsay and Norma, and Twila and Ruth continue to chat about our discussion. Kathy, Claire and Alison enjoy the valentine refreshments.

Palmer Job Corps Tour - Oct. 2009

After stuffing and sealing hundreds of baby book bags, a few of us took a tour of the Job Corps facilities. We were impressed with the strong support and high levels of vocational training provided to those who are selected for the program.

Baby Book Bags - October 2009

Our chapter collaborates with Kappa from the Mat-Su Valley to put together infant literacy bags. These bags contain a beautiful book and information explaining the importance of reading to children from the moment they are born.
